Beagling
Facts and History of Beagling
Beagling is part of the reason why
Beagles have surged in popularity. Beagles not only make great
house pets, but also are very good at tracking wild game
through the woods.
There is no better dog breed in the world than the Beagle
when it comes to chasing after small game, like rabbits.
Hunting hounds like the Beagle are happy to track down the
small game through all sorts of terrain without having to
actually have the experience of killing it.
So to enjoy the sport of Beagling you do not need any guns
or worry about killing anything. All you really need is a good
dog and a comfortable pair of shoes.
Because Beagles are small, you can keep up with them on
foot, and you donÕt have to worry about riding a horse just to
keep up, so this makes it very cheap to get started in this
sport.
If your dog gets really good you can compete in Field Trials
with other dog owners to see who has the best tracking dog. At
Field Trials you will see a large number of Beagles at these
events.
This is because the Beagle possesses many of the necessary
qualifications which assure a great performance in the field.
They are fast for their size and have a great deal of stamina,
a keen nose, and endurance. The American Kennel Club states
that the purpose of the field trial is for the dog to find game
and pursue it in an energetic and decisive manner.
The History Beagling
This sport goes way back into
history and it was largely due to British Royalty that this
sport became so successful. People like Queen Elizabeth, Queen
Victoria, Henry VIII, William the Conqueror, the first Prince
of Wales, King James I, and William of Orange were all into
beagling.
In fact in many paintings, Royalty was frequently painted in
full court Regalia, wearing the crown jewels, and with their
favorite Beagles on their laps, or on horseback in the fields
with their Beagles running alongside.
As you can see Beagles are great at tracking game due to
their small size and great sense of smell. If you have a dog I
encourage to give the sport of beagling a try.
