How Beagles Behave

Beagle behavior is very unique. Since the beagle was originally bred to be a hunting hound, bringing this dog inside can present some unique training demands.

Beagles originated in England. It was believed they were the result of mixing of several different hound breeds, which are extinct, which gives them their unique beagle behavior. The beagle is not a fast dog, but persistent and with a great sense of smell. Hare hunters in England loved the beagle because they are slow, the hunt would go on longer than normal.

Beagles were trained to be single minded so training beagles can be difficult in some cases. If you do try to train a beagle do so in a room or area where there are no distractions. Also be sure to keep training sessions brief and to the point.

Beagle behavior also involves studying their unique bark. Beagles love to bark, which as beagle owners is not much of problem because we expect it. It is our neighbors that usually have a problem.

Beagles should be trained not to bark, or only bark when there is danger. You can train your beagle to do this. Some training devices like citronella collars for beagles also work, but you have to constantly refill the citronella.

Using positive reinforcement, when your dog barks, just distract the dog onto another more appropriate behavior, and reward them for the change.

Beagles also have a lot of energy and need exercise and stimulation. By giving your beagle lots of exercise, the barking should decrease as well.

Beagles don't do well in small apartments or homes, and have been known to tear up places when bored. If you have a large house or a big backyard, then getting a beagle is an option for you.

A good aspect of beagle behavior is that they love to play with children. This is another great way to keep your beagle tired out and out of trouble.

Difficult beagle behavior problems can be difficult to solve out on your own. Sometimes you need to get a professional dog trainer to help you. To find a good dog trainer, ask around for referrals. Referrals from other satisfied dog owners is the best way to find a dog trainer. If you only rely on the Yellow pages to find a dog trainer you don't know what you are getting.

Also, if you hare having beagle behavior problems, be sure to visit your veterinarian to rule out any medical causes.
