Caring For Your Beagle

Beagle care does not have to be overly complicated. But at the same time it should be taken very seriously. You are responsible for taking care of this living creature and making sure all its needs are met.

Water is the most basic of beagle care but the most important. Make sure you provide clean fresh water at all times, more during hot weather. The water bowls should be washed at least weekly to prevent bacteria build up.

Finding a quality dog food is another basic beagle care requirement. Look at the label on the bag of food you are feeding. The first ingredient listed should be some type of meat. Either beef, chicken, or some variation.

Food should only be offered twice a day for beagles. Since beagles are prone to obesity, only offer food for no longer than 15 minutes twice a day. Obesity is a large problem for all dogs, and it continues to get worse.

Be sure to take your beagle to the veterinarian at least once a year. Take your beagle twice a year to the vet if it is over 7 years of age. Making sure your beagle has the basic vaccinations is a great way to prevent illness. The standard dog vaccines are rabies and DHPP. The D stands for Distemper, the H stands for Hepatitis, the P stands for parvovirus, and the other P stands for parainfluenza.

Spaying or neutering your beagle is another way to keep them healthy and keep medical expenses low. If you spay your beagle before she has her first heat you can dramatically reduce the chances of your dog getting mammary cancer.

Also by having your dog spayed or neutered you prevent unwanted pregnancies and all the expenses related to that aspect of beagle care.

Training is one of the most important aspects of beagle care. As soon as you get your beagle puppy you should start house training them. You can start obedience training too, but it is generally recommended that you wait until the puppy is 4 months old for this.

Behavior problems are one of the most common reasons why beagles are given up by their owners to shelters. By properly training your beagle you can prevent behavior problems.

Beagle care should be taken seriously but that does not mean you canÕt have fun spending time with your best friend.
