Beagle Dog Breeding

Beagle Dog Breeding Information

Beagle dog breeding is a lot easier when compared to trying to breed other dogs. Beagles are not as prone to many of the pregnancy and reproductive problems that many more inbred breeds are.

Beagles have a high fecundity, which means the females can produce offspring at a good rate.

You should start breeding your bitch after one to two years of age. If you breed your beagle too young, you will end up with lots of problems. You may be anxious to start beagle dog breeding, but wait until your dog matures.

Beagles come into heat a couple of times a year. When your beagle comes into heat, the dog has to be bred, so it is best to keep a male beagle around and available.

Female beagles will only allow male dogs to breed them during standing heat. When a female beagle enters standing heat it is best to breed them on days 1, 3, and 5. Multiple breedings will give you the highest rate of success.

The normal beagle pregnancy is about 63 days but can vary from 54 to 72 days depending on what day in the heat cycle they were bred. To tell if your beagle is pregnant you have to wait at least 6 weeks. Normal signs of beagle pregnancy include a distended abdomen, swollen nipples, increased appetite, and nesting behavior. In obese beagles sometimes it can be hard to determine if they are pregnant.

As a pregnant beagle gets closer to whelping, provide a whelping box and some old blankets. Dogs have a nesting instinct when it gets close to the time to give birth. Also make sure you give your dog a quiet are to give birth in.

The average beagle litter size is anywhere from 2-14 dogs. First time mothers often have small litters. It is the bitches that have had a few litters before that have the largest litters.

Countless numbers of dogs are euthanized in this country everyday because no one wants them. Before you start to breed your beagle make sure you have a plan on what to do with up to 14 puppies.

Responsible beagle dog breeding is your responsibility. It not recommended that you breed your beagle. By having your dog spayed before the 1st heat you can dramatically reduce the chances of mammary cancer. Beagle dog breeding should only be done once you understand all aspects of dog pregnancy.
