Interesting Facts About The Beagle
Beagle history has a lot of mystery to it but there are some
facts we seem to know for sure. One of AmericaÕs most popular
dog breeds for years because of it great temperament and
size.
Beagles first came to the United States around the 1830s.
Through breeding after they got here by a few people, we have
what we recognize today as the beagle.
In 1884 the American Kennel Club recognized the beagle as a
breed, making it one of the oldest breeds recognized. The
beagle is a member of the AKC Hound Group.
Currently the beagle is the 5th most popular breed of dog in
the United States. In beagle history it has consistently been
in the top 10 most popular dog breeds the last several decades.
One of the most famous beagles of all was Snoopy the cartoon
character. Snoopy may be one of the reasons for this breeds
popularity.
Beagle history tells us that the beagle was derived from
several different dog breeds, many of which no longer exist
today. It started back in the 1100's when William the Conqueror
brought the Talbot hound to England.
In beagle history the Talbot hound was mixed with the
English hound to produce a unique dog breed. That breed was
then also crossed with the Southern and North Country beagle to
get what we call the Beagle.
Beagles were bred to hunt small game, especially rabbits, a
popular sport among the upper class in England. Beagles are
great scent hounds and love to run in packs.
Beagles are used by several law enforcement agencies to
since out narcotics and other illegal substances at border
crossings and quarantine stations.
There is even some stories that beagles my have been in King
Authors Camelot, but no proof. Beagles are continuing to grow
in popularity today. In fact in February 2008, a beagle won
best in show at Westminster Kennel Club for first time ever.
