Beagle Obedience Training
Teaching Beagle Obedience
Beagle obedience training often proceeds at a slower pace
than that for most dog breeds because beagles have special
temperaments.
Beagles are known to have one tract minds and are easily
distracted during training sessions. To get the most out of
your training sessions be sure to keep them brief and in an
area where there is little distraction.
Teaching Basic Commands
When starting to teach basic commands here are some
guidelines that must be followed:
1. Be consistent in your wording of the commands, use the
word come, not come here or here.
2. Be consistent in your tone of voice. It is important to
be firm but not intimidating
3. Reward must come immediately, within seconds if the dog
is to associate the reward with following the command
correctly.
4. Never use a command when you cannot immediately reward or
punish the behavior. If you cannot follow through after giving
a command to your beagle then donÕt give it.
5. Make sure everyone in your family is consistent with the
commands that they are giving. If there are four people telling
the dog to all do something else, the dog will not learn as
quickly and everyone will get frustrated.
6. Remember that beagles love to please the pack leader
which is you. They can only please you if they know exactly
what to do,
Start by teaching the basic sit command first since this is
the most basic. Also when you have the sit command mastered you
can use it along with other commands and situations.
For example if your beagle jumps on people training them to
sit when meeting new people is a great way to solve this
behavior problem.
Once you have the sit command mastered move onto the come
command and then the stay command. Try to only teach one
command at a time until the dog has that command mastered.
Keep training sessions short and too the point puppies and
even adult beagles have very short attention spans, so have
several small training sessions through out the day.
Beagles are great fun and probably the most congenial of all
the dog breeds by teaching them these commands you are making
their lives so much better. Dog love routines, so provide on in
which it is clear to them what they have to do in order to get
rewarded.
Remember to have lots of patience and never physically hit
your dog while doing beagle obedience training.
