Beagle Pain Syndrome

Beagle Neck Pain

Beagle pain syndrome is most commonly seen in young beagles less than 12 months of age. It can also affect other breeds as well at about 12 months of age as well. There is no sex predilection.

This condition appears to be inherited in beagles, appears worldwide, and according to clinical reports, it may have a greater incidence in the spring.

Clinical Signs

Signs of beagle pain syndrome could come on gradually ore more acutely. Most often clinical signs appear acutely. The onset is usually episodic, which means signs may appear for a few days and then disappear and resolve, and then reappear.

>hunched posture

>guarding of the neck

>reluctance to move

>neck stiffness

>neurological signs

>fever

>reduced appetite

>weakness

>difficulty walking

>depression

Cause of Beagle Pain Syndrome

The cause of this syndrome is believed to be immune mediated, which means the beagles immune system is overactive. A systemic necrotizing vasculitis with subarachnoid hemorrhages are seen through the spinal cord and brainstem.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is usually made through a blood analysis, urinalysis, and radiographs. A CSF tap is usually done to confirm. A young beagle with neck pain usually has this syndrome, but it is important to rule out other causes like bacterial meningitis.

Treatment

Treatment of Beagle Pain Syndrome is with steroids. Normally clinical signs resolved in about 24 to 48 hours once steroids are given. Prednisone is started at 1-2mg/kg every 12 hours and then tapered to the minimum does that controls the clinical signs.

Azathioprine can be used in place of prednisone when the adverse side effects of corticosteroids are unacceptable.

Prognosis

The prognosis is good when the condition is treated quickly. This disease seems to spontaneously resolve as the beagle gets a few months older. If the case is more chronic in nature the prognosis is guarded. Some patients may need continuous therapy to control the clinical signs.

Summary

Beagle pain syndrome appears in 1 year old beagles of either sex as neck pain. The prognosis is good if treated early with prednisone
