Beagle Problems
Common Beagle Conditions
Beagle problems do not occur with a higher incidence that
other breeds. Most beagles are very healthy and rarely have
problems. Sadly, though there are some conditions that are seen
more frequently in beagles and in other breeds.
Ear Infections
Beagles, since they have long ears and are close to the
ground are very prone to ear infections. Due to the large ear
it can be hard for air to get into the ear canal. The beagle
ear provides a great place for yeast and bacteria to grow if
the ear canal gets wet.
Eye Problems
Beagle problems also include eye injuries as well. Being
close to the ground and out in the woods is a combination for
eye injury. Beagles also get a condition called Cherry eye as
well which is a prolapse of the third eyelid. Although this
condition looks painful, it is not. The danger with Cherry eye,
is that eventually that eye may be drier leading to
irritation.
Back Problems
Being a smaller dog and a long back, beagles can sustain
back injuries from jumping out of cars or off furniture. Most
commonly these back injuries are due to a disc rupture. In
moderate to severe cases this requires surgery.
Beagle Pain Syndrome
Young beagles about 12 months old are susceptible to this
condition which causes severe neck pains. The dog may also be
reluctant to walk or be petted. You may also see a decreased
appetite and fever.
This condition is a genetic condition of beagles and both
sexes are equally affected. Most cases are seen in the spring.
Treatment usually consists of steroids.
Diarrhea
Like all dogs, sometimes they get into things they should
not or eat to much causing beagle problems. If your beagle has
diarrhea, donÕt feed anything but a small amount of dry food
and provide lots of water. Most cases of beagle diarrhea
resolves in 24 hours. The important thing is to restrict food
during this time, but provide lots of water to prevent
dehydration, especially in beagle puppies which can become
dehydrated quickly.
Most beagle problems can be resolved quickly with a little
attention from you and your veterinarian. Take care of your
beagle and you can live a long happy life together.
